Australia’s only purpose-built motor museum and restoration workshop is just an hour outside Canberra
Just an hour out of Canberra, Binalong Motor Museum makes a perfect day trip for car lovers young and old. Constructed in 1992 by owner Stuart Saunders, the museum lays claim to being Australia’s only purpose-built motor museum and restoration workshop.
Visitors can enjoy inspecting around a dozen classic vehicles of yesteryear including Ferraris, Bugattis and Ducati motorcycles. One of the most unique vehicles is a sports car powered by an aeroplane engine, which quite incredibly, is still registered to drive on Australian roads.
As an active workshop, the collection changes regularly, and you never know what you might see. Children will marvel at the cutaway engine displays, the steam locomotive engine and there’s even a vintage plane.
The museum sits on several acres of lush gardens with facilities for barbeques and picnics. Guided tours are available by appointment. While it’s generally open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends, it’s advisable to call ahead to make sure the owners aren’t away.
Admission is a very reasonable $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for children.
Binalong village is situated 37 kilometres from Yass, just off the Hume Highway and is a charming historic town with around 250 residents.
