Design competition to revitalise Garema Place
A transportable micro park is temporarily coming to Garema Place in November. A community deisgn competition has been held, with a public vote to select the final design that will transition from blueprint to reality.
A micro park is designed to create compact, usable public space in underutilised locations. They may contain components such as vegetation, somewhere to sit, interactive elements, lighting and be visually interesting and inviting to use, supporting activities such as reading, eating, sitting and socialising.
Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris said the micro parks project was a unique way for Canberrans to temporarily transform a small pocket of their every-day environment into a suburban paradise.
Fourteen designs were submitted from a range of community members including individuals, families, students and professionals. A jury has shortlisted the submissions received and selected six design ideas, with a public vote to decide the winning design. The vote is open until 6 September 2017.
Construction of the micro park is expected to commence in late October 2017. The micro park will be installed in Garema Place for approximately two months from late Spring. Options to move the micro park to other locations in the City will be investigated and dependent on the winning design.
