Majura Pines to host national competition
The National 24-hour Mountain Bike Championships are on again, hosted once again by Canberra Off Road Cyclists (CORC). The course returns to Majura Pines, just 20 minutes outside of the city centre, which was last the site of the event in 2012. The event runs across the weekend from Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 October 2017.
Competitors will start the race at midday on the Saturday and must complete as many laps of the technical 10.5 kilometre course over a period of 24 hours.
For those unwilling, or unable to push themselves over a full day of riding, there is also a 6+6 hour alternative which begins at 12.00pm and ends at 6.00pm on both the Saturday and Sunday.
Competitors are able to camp on site overnight. Extreme athletes can enter the solo race, but for lesser mortals there are also team categories.
Last year’s event was held at Stromlo Forest Park and was won by Edward McDonald who completed gruelling 37 laps in the allotted time. The first placed female was Liz Smith who completed 29 laps.
The event showcases some of the best riders and best terrain in cross country cycling, helping Canberra’s growing reputation as a must-ride destination among avid mountain bikers.
